South Park San Francisco's New Restaurant: What Flour & Branch Brings

A humanoid robot named Iris and a wheeled robot named Atom have been seen rolling around South Park, the grassy oval between Second and Third Streets. They belong to OpenMind, a nearby robotics company that sends humanoid, wheeled and four-legged robots into the park for testing, sometimes several times a week. OpenMind says the robots build "social intelligence" by interacting with people in the park. One of the company's business development managers told Mission Local that a neighbor comes and meets the robots pretty often.

Erwin Ganschow, co-owner of Caffe Centro, called the robots "semi-annoying." He also called them evidence that people are working nearby and might eventually stop in for lunch. "It's good for business," he said.

That is the story of South Park in 2026 so far. The people came back to work before the places to eat came back. This month, for the first time in years, a new restaurant is betting that the office crowd around the oval will support more than one table.

The Money Came Back First

The oldest public park in San Francisco is ringed by low-rise buildings and shaded by London plane trees. Over the last few years those buildings have been filling with investment firms, and Mission Local's July reporting lists who moved in:

  • Flourish Ventures opened its San Francisco office at 140 South Park in 2022.
  • Touring Capital followed in 2025, announcing a South Park office along with a $330 million fund focused on AI software.
  • Notable Capital and the investment manager Coatue both list offices at 21 South Park.
  • Founders Circle Capital, MGV and other investors work within walking distance.

A commercial broker quoted in the same piece described South Park as mainly an office market. Office rents per square foot there have risen significantly, and he said early-stage startups with venture funding are part of the reason. He called retail weaker and more volatile. The office side recovered quickly, and the storefront side mostly did not.

One Table on the Oval

For most of this recovery, the park's food scene has been a single business. Mission Local calls Caffe Centro, at 102 South Park, the oldest operating coffee shop and café on the park. Its wood-lined room is a little worn, and its menu is simple and fairly affordable. Ganschow compares it to the sleek, corporate cafés tied to the tech industry, like the busy Blue Bottle about a block away on Second Street, and calls his place "kind of old-school."

Caffe Centro's survival depended on an unusual landlord. Mission Housing, an affordable housing developer, let the café reopen as a worker-owned collective in 2024. During the pandemic, its most reliable customers were residents of Mission Housing's three nearby SROs. Nearly 100 people live in those buildings, some directly above the café, and the staff has tried to keep prices low enough for them to keep eating there.

Ganschow has worked at the café since the early 1990s, and he gives the clearest measure of how far the park has come. "In 2024, South Park was dead," he told Mission Local in July. Now, he said, "we're doing roughly three-quarters of our pre-pandemic business." Most of that growth comes from wealthier workers returning to the tech and investment offices nearby. He describes the gains as fuller tables, busier midweek lunches, and enough revenue to pay the bills while keeping prices low.

"There's a light at the end of the tunnel."

Three-quarters of the old business, earned by the only restaurant on the park, shows two things. The demand has returned, and there has been almost nowhere else for it to go.

The Storefronts Around the Park

The empty restaurant spaces explain the gap. Each one closed at a different point in the park's ups and downs.

Space Last restaurant tenant When it closed Status
155A South Park The Butler and the Chef, a French bistro End of 2017 Flour & Branch scheduled to soft-open October 8
Former South Park Cafe South Park Cafe March 2020 Current occupancy not reported
Ground floor of the Madrid Hotel Mexico Au Parc 2021 Vacant as of July; a tenant signed a lease and then defaulted
102 South Park Caffe Centro Still open Reopened in 2024 as a worker-owned collective

The Butler and the Chef got through the dot-com bust, a period when contemporary coverage called the park "ground zero" for tech layoffs. It finally closed at the end of 2017. The Mexico Au Parc space shows how fragile the retail side still is. A tenant signed a lease there and then defaulted, which leaves Caffe Centro as the only restaurant on the park.

What Flour & Branch Is Bringing to 155A

Flour & Branch began online in 2020. It opened a brick-and-mortar bakery in SoMa in 2022, and owners Lauren Arnsdorff and Walter Carrera are now moving it to South Park as an all-day restaurant. Arnsdorff told Mission Local that people walking by regularly tell her the park needs another restaurant. Ganschow welcomes the competition. He said more restaurants could give workers a reason to leave their offices, and possibly another reason to come to the neighborhood at all.

The restaurant's website lays out a day that runs past lunch:

  1. Morning: pastry and coffee.
  2. Midday: brunch until 2.
  3. Evening: supper, plus non-alcoholic apéritifs and adaptogen tonics.

Two features stand out. A dessert dim sum cart is set to circle the dining room every hour with doughnuts, truffles and canelés, and supper is planned to include melted cheese wheels and other dessert "performances," according to SF Standard. Fans of the SoMa bakery will also find favorites like stuffed French toast and "brookies," a brownie-cookie hybrid topped with crepe crumble. The website also lists outdoor seating, memberships, private events, and a tucked-away courtyard chef's table.

The schedule posted on the site lists a soft opening on October 8 and a grand-opening weekend on October 16 and 17, and reservations are open through OpenTable. Those dates are still plans. The opening was first expected in late June and then pushed to July before landing in October. We could not find current daily hours, so check the restaurant's own channels before planning a visit around a specific time.

The supper service is the important part. The workers who came back to South Park have shown up for midweek lunches at Caffe Centro. Flour & Branch is testing whether that crowd, and the neighbors who already use the park, will also show up in the evening.

The Rest of the Walk

The new energy reaches past the oval. Saam opened on July 24 at 415 Brannan Street, a short walk from the park. It is the first U.S. restaurant from chef Thitid "Ton" Tassanakajohn, whose Bangkok restaurant Le Du was named the best restaurant in Asia in 2023. Saam means "three" in Thai, referring to the spicy, salty and sour flavors on its menu. The menu features lesser-known regional dishes, leans on local seafood, and has no pad thai. About half of the menu stays the same, while some featured dishes rotate with the seasons. Line-caught halibut replaced king salmon after salmon fisheries closed, and the kitchen expects to add persimmons in the coming weeks. As of Resy's September 16 feature, Saam served dinner only and prime-time reservations were hard to get. The chef said the team was considering a simpler, casual lunch for the local working crowd.

Yesterday, October 3, Second Street between Bryant and Brannan hosted the first Persicano Festival, a free Persian-Mexican street fair. Organizers say they want to make it an annual event. No 2027 date has been posted.

If Saam adds the lunch service its team is considering, it would put another restaurant on the same weekday customers Caffe Centro has relied on. Flour & Branch's opening puts a second restaurant on the park itself, at 155A South Park, starting October 8.

For owners on and around South Park, a block with two restaurants and offices that are filling up can affect how a property is presented and who it draws.
